Woodshop Makes Music

Doris Betuel

A block of wood. A love of music. What do these two things have in common? Our Robson Woodshop has a tremendous array of tools and equipment. Doubtless you have seen or purchased some awesome bowls, cutting boards, or trays from them. Perhaps you have even made some of these items in their fabulous studio! On June 2-4, the Woodshop had a 3-day hands-on class on how to create a one-of-a-kind musical instrument in the style of a Native American flute!

Led by woodshop members Chris Cygan and Dennis Downs, four lucky members were treated to the techniques on turning a block of wood into a Native American flute. The class yielded flutes with warm and expressive range tones, pleasing to the ear, and with the added benefit of easy to learn to play. All the flutes were unique and beautiful. Feast your eyes on some of the flutes that have resulted from the class! Congratulations to all the woodshop members who can now add music instruments to their repertoire of woodshop creations!

As some of you might know, Chris is an accomplished drummer and also participates in the weekly Robson Native American flute circle. The circle practices playing their flutes and meets regularly every Friday at 1:15 p.m. in the Picacho Room. For more information on the Flute Circle, please contact Doris Betuel at dorisbetuel@gmail.com. The flute circle is free and open to all residents!
