For the past six months I have written articles on the history and mysteries on the life of gourds, and I hope you’ve enjoyed your travels from the bios I’ve written on our members. So now I’m going to take the opportunity to introduce myself, the writer. I promise this article will be like speed dating.

Sit back, pour yourself a glass of wine, and relax.

I’m a Brooklynite from birth but was raised in a small incorporated village on Long Island, N.Y., from age 7 until I married. It was great growing up in a village of 9,600 residents. My interests always drew me to the arts whether it was painting, decorating, or doodling. It wouldn’t be until years later that I could express myself. My career, or rather careers, allowed me to experience many different professions. Purchasing avionics and instruments for several international airlines and chemicals was certainly not in the art field. How about dog grooming? It certainly was creative, and I must say so myself that my poodles and bichon were the cat’s meow.

In 2003 I became a certified Home Stager.™ I had found my niche and opened Home Staging and Redesign by Martha Prudence. It was great fun; I loved every minute helping homeowners prepare their homes for moving.

In August of 2019 we moved into Robson Ranch, and it was here that I first discovered how a gourd could take on a life of its own—thunder gourds, vessels, masks, and totems. Wow, I was impressed and needed to join the club. And I’m so glad I did.

I’ve been able to express my creativity and explore new areas I never knew existed. Our club members are fun, inspirational, and we’re always willing to help each other. Every gourd possesses its own character in size, shape, and color. My creativity, your creativity has no bounds.

That was only 317 words, so maybe not quite speed dating.

The gourd club will be holding orientation class every month. Our first class, which filled up quickly, was held in January. Our next class is scheduled for Feb. 15. If you’re interested in learning the art of gourding, you can sign up at studio 3 in the fine arts building. A $10 registration is required for the two-day class. Supplies and gourds will be provided. Membership is $20 for the year.

We will also be participating in the Spring Arts & Crafts Show and Sale in March.
