The Robson Ranch Vagabond group of seven rigs (14 people) departed Robson Ranch on Feb. 16 for a two–week adventure to West Texas and New Mexico.
Our adventure started with a night in Deming, N.M., with a hosted taco bar. The next stop was Van Horn, Texas, where we enjoyed each other’s company at the Hang Out Grill. Onward to the big event in Alpine, Texas, where we had a potluck dinner at the clubhouse at the Lost Alaskan RV Park. We dined at the famous Reata restaurant in Alpine on Thursday. Friday and Saturday brought two days of fantastic Cowboy Poetry at Cal Ross University. We enjoyed a variety of music and poetry from all over the U.S. Henry Morgan invited the group to observe the stars from his telescope. Fantastic dark skies!
The next stop was Lajitas, Texas, and the Big Bend National Park. We had a potluck at the Maverick Ranch Clubhouse. Many checked out the park and surrounding area. Mike Allibone and Brian Younge golfed at the Black Jack Golf Course under sunny Texas skies. A drive to the Santa Elena Canyon Overlook took us to the Rio Grande River on the border.
The next three days were spent checking out the Fort Davis area. We checked out the University of Texas McDonald Observatory (for a Star Party and guided tours), Marfa, Indian Lodge, and Fort Davis National Historical Site. Thursday we had breakfast together at the Black Bear Restaurant at the Indian Lodge and that evening we had a potluck at Henry Morgan’s camp site and enjoyed several games of Jenga.
We traveled to Carlsbad, N.M., and had the opportunity to see the Sitting Bull Falls, living Desert Zoo, and of course the Carlsbad Caverns. We had a potluck dinner and trivia night on Saturday. Congrats to Jeff and Jan Daniels for winning first prize.
Roswell, N.M., was the next stop where we checked out the Little Green Men and went onward to Alamogordo, N.M. We took in the Museum of Space History and McGinn’s Pistachioland. We had a happy hour the last night at Alamogordo KOA under beautiful evening skies.
The last stop of the trip was Wilcox, Ariz., where we stayed at the Elks Club/KOA and had dinner at the Double S Steakhouse where we shared great food and a time of reminiscing about the two–week trip.
Wednesday we were homeward bound after a busy but very fun two weeks on the road where we shared meals, conversation, and a piece of history that I am sure none of us will forget.
