They Say the Neon Lights Are Bright on Broadway…

Marsha Oliver

They say there’s always magic in the air!

And the lights will be bright here at Robson Ranch on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 18 and 19, when the Robson Ranch Singers present their Spring Show, “On Broadway.”

Our Directors, Laurie Laramie and Beth Forbes, have selected music from the various eras of Broadway’s famous historythink Professor Harold Hill leading the children in a parade playing the instruments he sold them (with no intention of staying in town that long!) or The Phantom singing to Christine in his lair beneath the opera house! With so many incredible songs to choose from, Laurie and Beth have created a program we feel sure you’ll love.

Many of us in Singers did musical theater in high school, college, or community theater and a very few of us actually performed on Broadway. In addition to the joy we found in singing all those great songs, we enjoyed the camaraderie being in a show can bring. And we knew for the audience there was the thrill of sitting in a darkened theater and experiencing the beauty of hearing amazing music performed live!

As I have for previous shows, I asked my fellow Singers for their “Broadway” show experiences…

I was cast as The Beast in our Sno-King Choral musical production of “Beauty and the Beast” and we performed a matinee (in costume) for children. As we greeted children in the lobby, a little girl saw Belle and started running toward her but when she spotted me behind Belle, she let out a scream! Right on cue, Belle banished me to the exit and comforted the little girland the show went on as planned.—Steve Gove

My family loved musicals, and my three sisters and I put on a production of South Pacific for our parents. Bless our parents for letting us move living room furniture around and bring in sand, a baby pool, and fake palm trees. Fast forward as an adult and living in the Chicago area, my husband and I went to many Broadway musicals.Jane Everett

I remember the time I was driving to work, playing the CD highlights of “The Phantom of the Opera.” I came to the toll booth just at the point where Christine (Sarah Brightman) belts out that impossibly high note. Honestly, everyone in the area stopped and looked in my direction!Julie Feldman
