Respiratory Wellness With Essential Oils

JoAnne Gaudioso

Numerous studies show that certain essential oils may ease respiratory symptoms from allergies, pollution, a cough, or a cold by soothing the throat, fighting bacteria, acting as a decongestant, increasing expectoration, and soothing inflamed mucus membranes.

Essential oils such as eucalyptus, rosemary, and peppermint are historically known to help clear and strengthen the respiratory tract, assisting the body in fighting off colds and other airborne diseases.

Eucalyptus has an overall cooling effect on the body, which is useful in reducing fevers. It also has antimicrobial properties, which may be helpful in fighting off germs that cause illness.

Additionally, breathing in eucalyptus from a diffuser may help break up mucus, reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and ease headaches and muscle tension that can result from a cold or the flu.

Rosemary promotes healthy respiratory function, especially relating to congestion caused by a cold or the flu. Rosemary is an antiseptic and antispasmodic, which helps to relieve coughs, colds, and flu.

Peppermint is considered to be one of the best essential oils for respiratory health. Its scent is clean, minty, and fresh. One of its main components is menthol, which creates a cooling sensation that can soothe or numb a scratchy throat when inhaled or sprayed on the throat. It is also used to reduce fevers when applied topically along the spine. It is an antiseptic and antispasmodic, making it effective in relieving coughs, sinusitis, throat infections, cold, flu, asthma, and bronchitis.

Frankincense is traditionally valued for its immune-strengthening capabilities and its beneficial effects on the respiratory system. It has been used to treat coughs, inflammation of the respiratory tract, excess mucus, bronchitis, and asthma.

These are only a few of the many oils that can help with various respiratory issues. If you are interested in learning about how oils can be used to help a particular respiratory issue you may have, please join me in a class or consultation to learn more.

Introduction to Essential Oils classes are offered via Zoom every Tuesday (July 6, 20, and 27) at 5 p.m. If you prefer to have a private consultation, I would be happy to schedule that in person at your convenience.
