Kitt Peak Welcomes the Ranchers

Pat Sand

The Roving Ranchers had a nice trip to Kitt Peak on Dec. 6. The observatory on the Tohono O’odham Nation land was founded in 1958. It’s located 54 miles southwest of Tucson at an altitude of about 7,000 feet.

The Ranchers had three private tours to choose from: the Nicholas U. Mayall 4-meter telescope, the McMath-Pierce Solar telescope, and the KPNO 2.1-meter telescope. The weather cooperated with beautiful clear blue skies and temps in the low 60s. Although the 65 Roving Ranchers came prepared for cooler weather, many shed their sweaters and jackets pretty quickly. Docents provided detailed tours for the three groups of the telescope of their choice. Afterward, Ranchers could visit the museum as well as the gift shop and the solar telescope showing active sunspots and flares.

As there were no nearby restaurants that could accommodate the size of our group, lunch locations of several restaurants in Tucson were shared with the group.

Below are the following upcoming events:

On Monday, Jan. 22, the Ranchers are scheduled to visit the Southwest Wildlife Center in Scottsdale.

In February 2024, the first annual Roving Ranchers golf cart poker run will be held. Stay tuned for details.

In April 2024, the Ranchers are doing a Paris River Cruise on AmaWaterways.

In January 2025, the Ranchers are scheduled for a seven-day Holland America cruise leaving San Diego to Mexico’s west coast.
