How Great Is Our God

Pastor Frank DeFusco

1 Peter 3:15 exhorts the believer to always be ready to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason for the hope that is in you. Some ask in earnest, while others seek to trip you up. To the former, engage with them humbly and with reverential awe. To the latter, try and avoid getting drawn into foolish arguments with them. So, let’s look at some ways that we can engage with, and answer the earnest seeker on how great our God is.

Starting with our universe, the Apostle John states that all things were made by Jesus (Jn. 1:3). If true, then Jesus must be greater than the sun, for the laws of nature state that “the cause is always greater than the effect.” And our sun is so big that 1,300,000 earths could fit inside. Yet, there is a star in our galaxy called Antares that’s so big that 64 of our sun could fit inside. Yet, there’s a larger star called Hercules that could fit 110,000,000 Antares inside it. In contrast, one molecule of water contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen. Enlarge them to the size of a grain of sand, and you would have enough sand to make a slab of concrete one foot thick and one-half mile high, stretching from California to New York. Mankind should be awestruck by this.

Comparatively, we are a tiny speck but consider ourselves “speck-tacular.” That’s the same pride that caused mankind’s fall from grace, along with God’s “very good” creation, which led to its perpetual state of entropy. Yet, its mystery and majesty continue to inspire the arts and sciences. Scientists call the force that holds together the nucleus of the atom “atomic glue.” However, as Paul states in Colossians 1:16 and 17, Jesus is that atomic glue, “for by Him all things were created and consist, or hold together.” But the day is coming when He will let go of the atoms and cause, “The heavens to disappear with a roar; and the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. (2 Peter 10). He will then create a “New Heaven and Earth,” that the apostle John describes as being exceedingly more mysterious, intriguing, and majestic than man has ever before observed (Revelation 21 and 22). They will be incorruptible, eternal, with sights and sounds unspeakable inhabited by magnificent creatures. Then, those who have been redeemed by our Lord Jesus Christ will receive incorruptible bodies (1 Corinthians 15:52-54).

And who are the redeemed? Only those that are born again spiritually (John 1:10-13; 3:3). Those justified through the “Blood of Christ” will inherit all things (Revelation 21:7). Now, who won’t be there? It’s the cowards, unbelievers, the abominable, the murderers, the sexually immoral, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and the liars (Revelation 21:8). Therefore, God’s kingdom will be curse free, death free, tears free, without sorrow, or pain. How great is our God!
