Democratic Club of Robson Ranch Reaches Milestone

Deborah Dorman

As of the start of this new year, the Democratic Club of Robson Ranch, AZ (DCRR) has reached 100 members and is still growing! The club offers an array of political, social, and community outreach (charitable, volunteer) activities. Recently, a New Year’s Eve party, with live music, was offered at a member’s home, and the next large social event will be a Super Bowl party, also at a member’s home. There is a monthly bunco gathering, and the board is busy planning some new activities, such as local trips and gatherings for political conversation.

Meetings are held alternately on Monday afternoons and Tuesday mornings once a month, staggered intentionally to be sure all members can attend some meetings. The most recent meeting on Jan. 9 hosted two local speakers regarding volunteer opportunities in Casa Grande and Eloy—Bob Shogren of the Casa Grande Alliance and Shenetta Osei of Eloy’s Curiel Elementary School—about working with local schools in a great variety of ways, such as mentoring parents, gardening, working in a food bank, and helping with reading programs for young children. The club also supports “Angela’s Closet,” a family support center within the Eloy Elementary School District that provides food, clothing, computer access, classes, and other support for families in need.

Political activities have included (in support of other Democratic organizations) canvassing, phone calling, petition signature gathering, literature drops, and contacting the legislature. Seventy people attended a candidate’s event held in early October. On Jan. 23, training was held for a program called “Request to Speak.” This is a way to register comments with the state legislature on pending bills.

Membership is open to Democrats, Independents, and any others who generally share the core values of equality, public education, health care for all, a woman’s right to choose, freedom of religion, science, and democracy. The club provides a safe and accepting environment for socializing and engaging in political and charitable activities with like-minded people.
