Material Girls news

Marie Stuersel

With summer’s arrival, the Material Girls brave the heat, spending time in the sewing studio at the Creative Arts Center. Activities include quilting, sewing and machine embroidery for charity or members’ own use. Several members got together in June to make items for the November craft sale, which brings in revenue to purchase fabric to make quilts. These are then donated to the Pinal Advocacy Center, Cancer Treatment Center, Eloy Senior Apartments and the Eloy Police Department, as well as our fellow Robson Ranch residents with life threatening health issues and spouses of those deceased. Members cut up fabric and sew pieces together to make quilt tops that are “sandwiched” (layered together with batting and backing), quilted on the long arm quilting machine and finished with a binding to make beautiful, warm quilts.

Each year, club members make a quilt to raffle at the November craft sale. This year’s quilt may be used as a wall hanging or throw and is a machine embroidered with a southwest theme. Stop by the studio to see the quilt. And, if you would like to win it, you can purchase tickets (one for $1, six for $5, 12 for $10 and 25 for $20). The quilt for next year’s raffle is already in the works and is stunning, so watch for the reveal after the craft sale.

If you’d like to learn to sew or would like to watch, please join us in the sewing studio at the Creative Arts Center any Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For more information, stop by the studio or contact one of the following members: Donna Payne at 815-488-6861, Robin Tisinger at 520-423-2623 or Patty Folly at 503-804-6260.
