Hello to all in the Ranch. As the hot days of summer slowly disappear and the nice days of fall and winter move in, it brings with it one of the more common birds found at the Ranch: “The Snow Bird.” Welcome back! This bird is easy to recognize by two pronounced things. First, they are more lightly complected as they have not been out in the sun much (except fishing, golfing, etc.) and second, they tend to be a little bored or looking for something to occupy a little more of their time. This is a little more prevalent in the male of the species. The female quickly fills her time with preparing the nest, quilting, playing cards, pickleball, swimming or one of the many other girl games found here at the Ranch.
There is a faction of us that enjoy flying R/C airplanes all year ‘round. Early mornings are the best time for flying on the hot days of summer, but this is a problem for some of the diehard flyers that just can’t get up in the morning. Now that the weather is cooling down and the sun rises later in the day, there are fewer excuses not to get up and out to enjoy this great hobby.
You can find our flying site by taking Harris Hawk around toward the back of the Ranch. As you pass the last house, look to your left. You can see the tables and hopefully some flyers. This is a good indication that you have found the right place. If you see us flying, come on back and have a good look. We are always interested in new members and willing to answer any questions you may have. This is as much a social club as it is a flying club. We always find things to talk about other than just flying.
If you have any interest at all and can’t make it out to the field, we have monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at the Sports Club in the small room across from the Toltec Room (room with the pool table) at 10:30 a.m. This month that will be the 20th of October.
At present, with the support that we get from Robson Ranch, there are no annual dues, and you don’t need to be an AMA member to enjoy this great hobby. All you need is a little desire and the willingness to invest in some equipment. We have flyers in the club ranging from beginners to more experienced, and all are willing to get new members up and flying. If nothing else it is great to gain the satisfaction of learning a new skill or a refresher course in some old skills such as cutting, gluing and replacing. These are what we use to fill the time not used on flying. It may not sound as exciting as it really is, but it is better than sitting around and watching the same old stuff on the TV.
Give it some thought and come see us. This all goes on here at the Ranch. You’ll be here with your neighbors, and there is no need to wander off several miles from your home. Try it, you’ll like it!
