Desert Threads met outside on the patio by the Cottonwood Phoenix Room in May. This was our first in-person meeting for over a year. Members wore masks and were invited into the Phoenix Room to view the many quilts made for charity (delivered to UMOM on May 14). Our Opportunity Quilt was on display, and raffle tickets were available to purchase. Members could renew their memberships for the next year, submit the dues online, or mail dues to the secretary. A Zoom meeting was available for those not able to attend in person. Great fun was had socializing, showing, and sharing our projects from the past year.

At our May 12 annual meeting, we elected new officers for July 2021 to June 2022. New officers are: president, Marion Kersnick; vice president, Pat Sinclair; treasurer, Ann Wasascha; secretary, Nancy Bonngard; programs, Mary Platt and Cindy Templeton. The following committee coordinators will continue for the next year: membership, Pam Matassarin; newsletter, Eva Jones-Brewster; community service, Jody Edwards; hospitality, Kathy Norton; refreshments, Jacki Faller; foundation grant, Sue Edgar; publicity, Sue Bart.

The June meeting will be virtual via Zoom. Email [email protected] to receive the link to join our meeting. There will not be formal meetings for the summer months, but we will continue to have informal Zoom meetings to discuss what we are working on. Plans are being made to start again with the second Wednesday in September, with hopes we will be able to meet in person. Members can gather for sewing and chatting at the Oakwood sewing room on the following days of the month: first and second Wednesday noon to 6 p.m.; second Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.; third Monday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guests are welcome to join (see below).

As a chapter of the Arizona Quilters Guild (AQG), members get the benefit of all lectures and classes offered by AQG. Some are free virtual presentations, and some are full classes for small fees for live virtual learning. Upcoming (free to members and $10 to non-members) lectures: June 3 with Diane Harris, Make Extraordinary Scrap Quilts; June 10 with Nina Clotfelter, Thread! What’s the big deal?; July 15 with Candy Grisham, Give a Girl a Wedge. For information about fee-based classes, visit www.ArizonaQuiltersGuild.org.

If you would like to learn more about quilting and the many resources available for learning, participating, and sharing, then join one of our meetings. We invite all levels of interest. Would you like to make quilts for others in need? Come join our group. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday morning every month. Some meetings will be virtual, some in person.
