What Color Is It? No, Really—What Color?

Barbara Seawalt

As we learned previously, glazing your pottery can be a tricky affair. Especially when using the high-fire glazes. We brush on three coats of glaze, all the while shrugging our shoulders and crossing our fingers. What have I done to my project?

You see, the color that comes out of the jar is a far cry from the color it will look like after firing in the kiln at 2185 degrees. And it will look different depending on which clay you’re using: B-Mix (aka white clay) or Speckled Buff (a red-ish clay). That’s why our Glazing Wizard and her accomplice made several colored tiles. They give us a fair idea of what our final project will look like. But if you start layering the colors, the end result may be a complete mystery.

If you want to have some fun and learn more about ceramics, you’re welcome to stop in the Robson Ranch Ceramics and Pottery Club studio. Or you can text Debbie Mitchell at 303-875-6371 to find out when the next orientation will be. Hope to see you there!
