Virtues in Action: Building a Kinder World Together

Meaningful Conversations group

Betsy Lydle Smith

Have you ever paused to consider what your favorite virtue might be? At this time of year, you may find yourself drawn to Compassion, or perhaps Generosity, Joyfulness, Faith, or Purposefulness. In fact, more than 360 virtues appear across the sacred texts of the world’s religions—something Dr. Dan Popov, co-founder of The Virtues Project, discovered during his extensive research.

Concerned about rising levels of violence—especially among children and youth—Dr. Dan, a pediatric clinical psychologist; his wife, Linda Kavelin-Popov, a family therapist and Hospice Spiritual Director; and John Kavelin, a Disney Imagineer, asked themselves how they could help create a kinder, more compassionate world. Their answer was a book for parents, The Family Virtues Guide.

What began as a single book has grown into a global nonprofit movement active in more than 130 countries. Today, The Virtues Project includes five additional books and is used by families, schools, organizations, communities, and even governments—all with the same goal: to bring out the best in people.

What makes The Virtues Project unique? It offers five practical strategies that help us develop and live our virtues every day. Virtues Cards help remind us of the qualities we wish to cultivate. And because words are powerful—they can break a heart or empower a dream—using the Language of Virtues enables us to acknowledge, encourage, and inspire one another. Additional strategies include recognizing teachable moments, setting clear boundaries, honoring the spirit, and practicing deep listening. Together, these tools help us lead more joyful and meaningful lives.
