Tribute to Gloria and Dolly

Betsy Lydle Smith

Two stars joined the night sky this week

shining brightly from the east.

They ascended one by one

with different facets of gemlike qualities,

strong and courageous, their truth shone forth.

They raised us up to know our brilliance,

lives well-lived, with love, joy, and wonder.

One sang and danced, the other spoke and wrote,

for women everywhere to be free and unencumbered,

to love whom they wish,

including their own bodies.

To free our minds from male domination.

to pursue our dreams and vocations,

to think, to earn, and to be-

all that we can be.

Shine on, Gloria and Dolly.

Your magnificent voices sing on.

Encouraging, inspiring, and joyful.

“Don’t give up,” they say.

The tide is turning.

We’ll never go back.

We are half the world.

Our voices of strength, compassion,

kindness, and idealism are needed.

We look to you now in the night sky for guidance.

You have done your part.

Now it’s our turn and

We will carry on.
