They Say the Neon Lights Are Bright on Broadway…

Marsha Oliver

They say there’s always magic in the air!

And the lights will be bright here at Robson Ranch very soon as the Robson Ranch Singers present their Spring Show, “On Broadway,” on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 18 and 19.

Our Directors, Laurie Laramie and Beth Forbes, have selected music from the various eras of Broadway’s famous historyyou’ll agree “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and be transported by music from Les Miserables and Jersey Boys.

Many of us in Singers did musicals in high school, college, or community theaters. We loved singing all those great songs and the camaraderie being in a show can bring. Plus we knew for the audience there was the thrill of sitting in a darkened theater and experiencing the beauty of hearing amazing music performed live!

As I have for previous shows, I asked my fellow Singers for their “Broadway” show experiences…

It started in grade school when my sister and I sang “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” from South Pacific; then in college, it was “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from Jesus Christ, Superstar. After college, I danced and sang as a eunuch (yes, a eunuch) in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.Sue Jarchow

My Catholic school, in a small farming community in Illinois, had less than 300 students and my class only had 65; however, one nun had a love for theater and although my primary love was sports, she cast me in every production. In my senior year Sister Bernadette chose Kiss Me Kate and me to play the male lead. I was mortified at singing something other than a hymn and having to kiss a girl in a Catholic school production…I ended up enjoying both.Bob Pape

My most memorable event was when I was in high school and able to see a parade featuring bands from all over the United States, celebrating Meredith Willson, who wrote the play and did the film production of The Music Man. I got to see celebrities from the play and filmall within 10 miles of my home in Clear Lake, Iowa. The event was in Mason City, Iowa, which was Meredith Willson’s boyhood hometown and the inspiration for his unforgettable play.Dave Anderson
