These Women Know Their Way Around a Shotgun

Vicki Ray

Among the honors handed out at the 15th annual Robson Trap Trials, held March 14 at Tucson Trap & Skeet, three women representing different communities earned best of field trophies.

The women agree it’s more fun to shoot a moving target than a static one. First-time winner Toni Mullarkey, Robson Ranch, shot cans and paper targets when her kids were young. She’s competed in the Trap Trials four times and enjoys the event with its lunch and awards. Mullarkey is thrilled with her trophy!

Quail Creek’s Joan Brown regularly shoots sporting clays, a shotgun sport that simulates hunting. She practices trap shooting a few months ahead of the Trap Trials and has come in first two times. Brown doesn’t compete much formally but does enjoy the friendly folks who gather each year for the Trap Trials.

Vicki Ray, PebbleCreek, took up shooting during the pandemic to relieve her boredom with golf. With the help of her husband and members of the PebbleCreek gun club, she started pistol shooting and moved to the more dynamic sport of trap shooting. Ray enjoys the Trap Trials because shotgunners of all skill levels compete.
