Rotary Club launches scholarship fund with golf proceeds

Lloyd Fleming

The year-old Eloy/Robson Ranch Rotary Club held its inaugural Challenge Golf Tournament on Saturday, March 26, at the Robson Ranch Golf Club to launch a scholarship fund for deserving students at Santa Cruz High School in Eloy.

Those who golfed, the various sponsors, as well as the many non-golfer dinner guests combined to raise $2,500 to launch the scholarship fund. Golfers were mostly from within our Robson Ranch family; however, two Rotary teams from Sun Lakes and Casa Grande also participated. The overall winning team was from the Sun Lakes Rotary Club comprising John Heffner, Bob McCloud, Dana Trofholz and Henry Petersen. They shot a 56 in this Scramble format event and were awarded their prizes by Rotary District Governor Frank Presson from Tucson. Second place was taken by a Robson Ranch team with a score of 57. Team members included Ted Poplowski, Nick Pike, Roy Johnson and Ben Blissett.

The team of Russ Feezer, Bob Shogren, Russ Ortiz and Terry Rattey claimed the Most Honest Golfer prize. Individual winners included Rob Fleming, Men’s Longest Drive; Charlene Rule, Ladies Longest Drive; Bill Rod, Men’s Closest to the Pin; and Terry Rattey, Ladies’ Closest to the Pin.

The event concluded with a dinner in the Hermosa Room, which included a number of raffle prizes. The top raffle prize was the use of a condo in Princeville, Kauai for one week, which was won by Eloy Mayor and Eloy/Robson Ranch Rotarian Joel Belloc.

We had a number of major sponsors we need to thank as their support was greatly appreciated. These sponsors included: Glenn Jones Motors, sponsors of the four Hole-in-One contests; the PGA Tour Superstore in Tucson for participant packages as well as a $1,000 gift certificate towards our Hole-in-One contests; Jay Wilson and the Robson Ranch Pro Shop for our event prizes and scoring; Robson Ranch Catering for gift certificate prizes; and Rotarian Bob Selinger for donating the use of his Kauai condo for one week as our grand prize raffle draw.

And a final thank you to everyone who golfed or attended the dinner. We look forward to welcoming more golfers and guests to our tournament in 2017.
