When players are struggling to improve their billiards game, many players just have a lesson or two from a qualified professional billiard instructor, but few have ongoing instruction or coaching. Truth is that most billiard players’ egos are what stops them from seeking out the proper instruction they need to truly improve their game. The difference between having a few lessons and having an ongoing professional coach can make a huge difference in your game over time.
Let’s talk about the difference between having a couple of lessons and having a coach. When you think of other sports like football, basketball, soccer, baseball, golf, and tennis, just to name a few, they all have coaches. A coach is the player’s instructor, teacher, and mentor who watches over what a player is doing and helps continue to improve and motivate the player over time. A coach can also keep the teaching level to the skill level of the player. For example improving a player from a 400 fargo rating to a 500 or 550 is different than training a player that is at a 600 fargo rating to improve to a 650 or 700.
Example: Let’s say in group 1 there are players who have a couple of lessons that improve their games, but after that no ongoing instruction or mentoring. Now let’s say in group 2 there are similar players at the same playing level that have ongoing coaching and mentoring every week to two weeks. In 6 months there will be a much greater improvement in the group 2 players. Keeping players on track and organized on what they are practicing, and also evaluating how they are improving their games is just a part of what a coach does. Having accountability to the coach on perfecting and mastering what the coach has laid out for the student to work on between coaching lessons is a huge part of the difference between having an ongoing coach and just taking a few lessons.
