This month, the Robson Ranch Material Girls are featuring their garment sewing group. Known for their intricate and creative sewn and quilted jackets, the group also engages in remarkable charity work, creating adult shirt savers and children’s mini backpacks. These projects not only showcase their sewing expertise but also highlight their dedication to making a positive impact in their community. The group is led by the experienced sewist Janita Baugh, who ensures that both seasoned sewists and beginners feel welcome and supported in their endeavors.
Let’s read what Janita has to say:
“Within the Material Girls club is a smaller group that enjoys sewing clothes for themselves and family. This is a fun group that meets each Friday morning to sew together and share ideas and techniques. No garment experience is necessary to join this group. There are always talented seamstresses on hand to give guidance. Each person chooses their own project to work on and if problems arise in construction there is always help and encouragement by the group.
At times, one jacket pattern is chosen and four or five gals use it to make a jacket with their own preferred fabric and detail choice. It is fun to see the finished projects that all look similar but quite different with individual choices. Most of the time everyone sews what interests them at the time.
“There is always room for new members to join this group. Beginner sewers are welcome. Sewing machines are available in the studio if one is needed.
“Along with garment construction we promote charity programs. Adult shirt savers (bibs) are made for both men and women to protect the clothes of those who may be ill or have eating issues. Brightly colored fabrics are chosen in hopes to brighten one’s day. These shirt savers are then distributed to assisted living, nursing homes, and the Hospice Centers in Eloy and Casa Grande.
“A second charity project is mini backpacks that go to The Children’s Advocacy Center in Eloy. Cheerful and fun fabrics are chosen to make these bags, which are then given to children who have been removed from their homes and are used to put their personal belongings in. It is hoped a personal bag may lift their spirits in their life situations.”
We are incredibly proud of the garment group and all that they contribute to the community. Their talent and dedication are evident in every stitch, and their charity work brings light to so many lives.
Please come by and visit the garment group on Friday mornings. We would love to see you!
