Avoid, Deny, Defend

From the HOA Office

On January 19 a crowd of around 70 Robson Ranch homeowners gathered in the Hermosa Ballroom to attend a free public safety presentation sponsored by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office called “Avoid, Deny, Defend.”

As the title of the presentation suggested, Captain Rubin Leos explained the advisable three-step procedure to follow in an active threat situation. First, if it is possible to do so safely, get away from the situation (AVOID). If safe escape is not an option, the second line of defense is to find a place to lock/barricade yourself in to deny access (DENY). As a last resort, when the only option for self preservation is to fight, you must attack. Defend yourself in any way necessary to stay alive (DEFEND).

What was the main take away message from Captain Leo’s presentation? Don’t be fearful of, or avoid public places. Just be aware of your surroundings and alert to what is going on around you at all times. There is no need to go to extremes, just take a few minutes to look around and take note of exits or other important elements that could be useful if necessary in an emergency. In time this practice will become second nature.
