Enduring Testing—James 1:12

Pastor Chet Kwiat

In the book of James, who was the half-brother of Jesus (same mother, different father), he says, “God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward, they will receive a crown of life that God promises to those who love him. (James 1:12 NLT). Jesus warned his followers that you will have many trials and sorrows here on earth. But take heart because I have overcome the world. (John 16:33b NLT).

Two things I find encouraging in these verses: first, it is not unusual for God’s children to face trials and even testing, which often comes amid suffering. Second, it is good to know that if we endure these things we will receive the “Crown of Life” that is promised by God. We can do this because Jesus has overcome the things of this world and is preparing a better place for us in our future. Therefore, don’t be surprised if you face difficult times, including sickness, personal attacks, or any other type of suffering. Sadly, that is the consequence of the original sin and our adversary, the devil. Thankfully, Jesus has overcome it all, and we can lean on him and the power of the Holy Spirit to make it through to the end.
