With two SUVs bursting with cookies, bars, cakes, pies, and bread, members of the Democratic Club of Robson Ranch (DCRR) filled tables in the hallway at the Spring Craft Fair with several sweet treats for their bake sale. They don’t know for sure how much they baked. But they needed a second table, and they doubled the amount raised last year!
From snickerdoodles and chocolate chip cookies to gingerbread tiles with rum butter glaze, coconut macaroons and lemon squares to Scandinavian sandbakkelse, pumpkin bread and coffee cake to berry pie and lemon-walnut galette, shoppers and vendors at the Craft Fair had plenty of delicious homemade goods to choose from. All proceeds benefited elementary school kids in Eloy.
It was a generous outpouring all around by the DCRR members who baked, packaged, and sold the baked goods; the people who purchased them; and all the people who made additional donations.
Angela Acuña, Parent Outreach Coordinator and McKinney-Vento Liaison, runs the Parent Support Center, also known as Angela’s Closet. Angela is on a mission to bridge the gap for those in need, and to address issues that prevent homeless kids from getting equal access to education. Angela’s Closet provides a food pantry, clothes/shoes bank, backpacks, and school supplies for students, as well as parenting classes, adult English language classes, and technology assistance for parents. Angela also coordinates an at-risk meal program where youths who are infants through 18 years old can receive an evening meal.
Education and literacy are powerful keys to enabling a brighter future for the world’s children, who in turn benefit the communities in which they live. We are facing a crisis in youth homelessness in Arizona. Our state has the fastest growing population of homeless youths in the nation. And so, the Democratic Club of Robson Ranch is happy to support Eloy School District programs that try to address the challenges some of their families face.
Thanks to the 30 club members who pulled out their recipe files and rolled up their sleeves to provide all the delicious treats, the 12 volunteers who packaged them all, and the six volunteers who sold the goods at the craft fair. And thanks to the community for supporting the bake sale and helping Eloy kids reach their full potential.
