On the road again with the Robson Ranch Vagabonds

The Vagabonds

From Green Valley in Southern Arizona to the San Diego shores it’s been a fun filled season travelling with our RV group. Halloween at Rocky Point, Mexico kicked off our season with “What happens in Mexico, stays in Mexico!”

Early December, seven rigs travelled south to Tubac. A frost delayed tee time allowed the ladies to go shopping (Honey, it’s too cold to golf) in the art colony of Tubac while three hearty souls waited for the Tubac Golf Course to thaw. Regrouping for happy hour prepared us for a wonderful meal and shared stories of the day at Stables Restaurant in the Tubac Resort where the booths were once actual stables, and the barstools are saddles. Day two: Historic Landmark Titan Missile Museum; a spine-chilling guided tour of this amazing silo still holds classified information from the 1960s Soviet Union missile crisis. Lunch at the world famous (as featured on Oprah some years ago) Wisdom Café just south of Tubac; margaritas that will knock your socks off, a scrumptious lunch and homemade fruit Burros for dessert. We walked off our lunch with a docent-led tour of the Tumacacori Mission National Historic Park, colonized by Jesuit Missionaries in the 1690s. Then back to DeAnza RV Park for an impromptu birthday party for Treasurer Dard Price: cake, margaritas and hors d’oeuvres. Day three: Tubac Presidio State Park walking tour and lunch in Tubac rounded out another memorable Vagabond outing led by Wagonmaster Rich Harris!

Late January 2016, thanks to the Navy service of Jim Law and Skip Syer, 10 rigs enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime stay on the beach at Camp Pendleton Marine Base. Imagine how safe we felt when a Marine-led tank brigade woke us at 0530. Wagonmasters Jeff and Layne Jones, with Mother Nature cooperating, led our activities: Day two: (after day one travelling and happy hour), a guided tour of San Juan Capistrano Mission where the swallows migrate back to every March 19; ocean-front lunch and shopping in Laguna Beach (the guys found a beach side tavern to “rest”) and back to the San Clemente Pier for a stellar sunset happy hour. Day three: a beautiful boat ride from Dana Point to Catalina Island; a guided open-air bus tour of Avalon where we discovered Wrigley pretty much owned/owns the island and that only 700 cars are allowed with a 25-year wait list, that golf carts are the island transportation. Lunch on the waterfront, a Casino Tour (an old dance hall, not ever a casino) followed by the most stunning sunset, even us local SoCal residents had not seen, including a slight “Green Flash” finale. Day four: Taylormade Golf Factory and a beach BBQ was a great way to relax and enjoy our serene beach accommodations. Day five: everyone enjoyed a day on their own exploring the San Diego area where some of our RVers had never been. Day five: back to the Ranch, beating the incoming storm and reflecting on another great Vagabond outing.
